I've lived in both and would still choose Payson. Mostly because it's still 'small town' and that's what I like. I lived there 14 years and there were only 5,000 people when I first moved there. When I left there were about 12,000. Prescott has a lot that Payson doesn't...more shopping, etc... but I never had to leave town to find anything I wanted or needed living in Payson. Never had a problem finding a job either.

Payson: a small-town Western feel; amenities & cultural events are limited. Near the scenic pine forest above the Mogollon Rim country, and 4-season activities
Prescott: much larger and up-to date with all modern amenities; not as isolated from other towns i.e. Cottonwood, Prescott Valley, Sedona & Flagstaff. Similar climates & elevation; plenty of expats in Prescott from CA and other regions.

First, I live in the area of Payson (so take what I say with a grain of salt).

The truth is, the two towns don't translate well.

For shopping, restaurants, culture, medical etc. Prescott wins hands down.

However (IMHO), for quality of life at a relaxed pace, Payson and vicinity is a GREAT place to actually live.

Now, with that said, The "draw" of Prescott is actually one of its bigger negatives.

Prescott and it's surrounding communities are truly becoming a "city".

Traffic virtually all hours of the day, construction, accidents, police activity etc..

So, when I made my choice, I chose to live in Payson, (actually Pine), but travel to Prescott for many of my needs.

One other factor which I personally found significant....

From Payson, you are only approx. 90 minutes from "the valley".

Again IMHO, excitement is good, but quiet and relaxation has a quality all it's own.

As long as I can travel to the "excitement" in a reasonable amount of time, I am happy to live in a more quite area.

I think this is an apples and oranges comparison. Both have unique things going, but as others have said Prescott has many more city amenities. Payson is beautiful though and not nearly as developed.

Another reason Payson, if that were my only two choices, would win hands down for me. However, as anyone can see, I live about an hour or so to the east.

In Prescott and Phoenix, there are many guys who wear Cowboy hats......

In Payson.... we have Cowboys...... not fashionistas. lol

Prescott: Bigger, more Medical facilities, more jobs, better Internet availability

Payson: Small town, limited Medical, very little in the way of entertainment, documented single thread issues with Internet availability, wonky Town Council plans for a Private Hockey School.

Payson is BELOW the rim, not on it. Been there many times in the past.

Simply for the sake of accuracy.

Payson is right at 5,000 feet.

The "Rim" varies but is approx. 7,400 feet.

The extra 2,400 feet make a difference.

Even this winter with little snow.

Virtually none in Payson, yet the rim had snow cover much of the winter.

Not deep, but there.
