Hi guys, newly accepted UM PhD student here looking to buy a house in AA. I am single but am concerned with the quality of school districts for resale value. I looked at NE however I'm priced out of the area. My friends are recommending the west side of Ann Arbor (not the old west but further west near Abbot Elementary, bounded by the 94 to the south). It fits my budget however the housing stock there seems to be much older than that in NE and many streets are unpaved, etc. Therefore I have a couple of quick questions and any advice is appreciated:

Is that area desirable? Safe? Stable?

How's the commute to UM (central campus) and downtown? Google map shows about 2.5 miles but I have never actually driven it.

Is it a lively area with young families or more of a old towners neighborhood?

How does Abbot Elementary stack up against its better-scored peers?

Thanks very much. I appreciate your advice.

It's fine. Not the most desirable area of town, but perfectly fine. A number of UofM professors live in the area.

When there is no construction, the drive down Miller downtown is nice and easy. Takes you right to Kerrytown. HOWEVER, there is no parking on central campus, you've got to park in one of the commuter lots, or take AATA in. The commuter lots are by Huron High and by the stadium/Pioneer.
AATA bus 18 goes from the Miller/M-14 park and ride down Miller to campus (the 2 bus stops in front of the dental school) and the hospital.

A little of both. All kinds of economic strati too.

Abbot is fine. My wife, her sister, and my niece all went there. I guess they turned out fine... It feeds to Skyline now, which is just off Maple @ M-14. The only "problem" with Abbot is that it also includes scio farms trailer park, either the poorest or 2nd poorest part of Ann Arbor. That's probably what pulls the scores down.

Thanks. How does the area compare to neighborhoods in the SE, e.g, turnberry village or Buhr Park? Housing stock seems similar but SE is priced lower.
