Hei,

Do you live in Anchorage? Yes, we are moving because of my job. I will work in Anchorage. My hubby is in Electronics. He is a specialist in access technology, alarms, DVR, video equipm. We did not look for job for him yet.

I was wondering if it is something he could find there?
I am just starting to look into areas, apartments and move.

I am not sure how to move....U-haul...just drive through Canada?
Or ship things there?

Anyway, you could pm me if you like. My Swedish is good enough to understand, but I is not easy to write anymore. My hubby is fluent though

Default Anchorage move

No I do not live up here. I only come up here a few times a year for projects.

From the other info I have read on this site I would recommend that you have it shipped and NOT drive through Canada.

The roads can be bad depending on season and customs can give you a hard time.

As for jobs go, I can not say...sorry.

I hope some natives can chime in and give you more good advice.

good luck

Are you going to move yourselves or is your company going to move you?

My job is great and pays well, but as about moving, unfortunately, we have to pay. We asked for this transfer.

Check out GCI.com. They are the big cable provider here and rent out their equipment. I'd bet a lot comes back broken.

On moving, the first thing you need to do is get rid of about half or more of your stuff. I'll admit to moving here with stuff we never used. The usual method of of moving is to hire a mover who will pack your stuff, ship it to Seattle and then barge it to Alaska. It will be expensive. Others have used U-haul or have sold most everything and come up with everything else packed in their car and towed trailer. Since you're looking at a summer move, the roads should be fine. When we moved here a mover told us how he would move south. he'd rent/buy a container, pack it himself, place it on a barge, hire a truck to deliver it and unpack it. He figured to cost would be under $1,000 at the time, probably higher now. The only thing is that it wouldn't be insured. The insurance isn't worth much anyway, since it only paid ten cents on a dollar if the moving container is lost at sea.

If you decide to drive, you'll need passports next year and if you're traveling separately, you'll need a notarized letter from the spouse not traveling stating it's OK to cross the border with the kids. You'll also need health certificates for the dogs no matter which way you travel. Also, if any in your family has a criminal record (including DUI), Canada may refuse entry at the border or at least make it a big hassle.

And you're gonna need a really big box for that house to fit in....
