I was really impressed with New Sagaya City Market. Nice store with good selection of high quality stuff and a good cafe. I had them send some halibut when I finished what I brought home and it was excellent. I'd rather go there than whole foods anyday.

Not Alaska related, but Wegmans recently announced that they are building their first store in North Carolina. That would be "south" of Virginia.

The best Alaskan grocery used to be Carrs - unfortunately, it is now Safeway. Natural Pantry, I remember when that was just a little one room store.

Times change and Whole Paycheck...err.. Foods is having issues. Doesn't surprise me that Wegman's is expanding.

I like Carrs for some things and Fred Meyer for others. Wal Mart is so-so on the Fresh stuff. If I use a lot of something then Costco... Costco isn't exactly 'near' me so we plan to go every couple of months or so to stock up. And when I am there I'll get some fresh foods if they look good and I just know it's going to be a week to eating a lot of whatever giant bag of fresh vegetable/produce I get.

Why is Carrs no longer the best one?

Carrs used to have a better selection. A lot of brands were given the boot to make room for Safeway brands.

Safeway could not compete with Carrs so they bought them instead. Safeway had to sell several stores so that they did not have a monopoly in the market. If I recall buyers were not lining up to buy the stores. Then all of a sudden some company no one ever heard of bought the stores. Then not long after Carrs was absorbed into Safeway all of the stores that Safeway sold went out of business.

If I also recall correctly all of the Carrs stores were to be renamed Safeway. I am guessing they kept the Carrs name as a peace offering to Carrs customers.

And they're right. I haven't been impressed with the quality of Whole Foods versus elsewhere. In some instances, you're paying for the privilege to pat yourself on the back for shopping there.

For me, the only reason to shop Whole Foods is if you have ethical issues with a particular brand or food source. There's nothing wrong with that, and it's laudable in many cases. Know what those issues are, though.

I would love to see Trader Joe's and Winco come to Anchorage and The Valley.

We need more variety and choices.

Winco is a great store, and I certainly appreciated having one close to me when I was raising a child. It would probably do really well in Anchorage or the Valley. Places like Winco are great for massive shopping trips where you stock up on essentials.

I've never set foot in Whole Foods, but I mostly shop at a store that's comparable because it doesn't have a parking lot the size of five football fields, rarely has lines at the checkout counter, isn't complete chaos with families sometimes pushing two carts at once with a bunch of kids running wild bumping into everyone and putting sticky, dirty hands all over the produce, and you're not stuck behind people constantly in the aisles, which is always my experience at Winco unless I managed to get there at an extremely off-time like 6 a.m., but even then was iffy.

When time is factored in, I might even save money by doing it that way. Never did the math and probably won't, but even if it did mean saving a few extra bucks, I don't think I'd go back to combat shopping for anything.

Our Natural Pantry in Anchorage is like a Whole Foods store. But you have to sell your first born in order to shop there full-time.

I heard that Albertsons bought out Carrs stores several years ago(2010 or 2011). But it's a Safeway-Carrs these days. Not sure of the relation.
