Bought a bottle of Balcones 100 Proof Rye today. It's not the worst thing I've ever drank (that would be Malört), but it's not good, either. It's not spiced like a typical rye. It's really heavy on the chocolate notes. Mixed it with another Waco product, Dr. Pepper, to try to take some of the awful edge off. Should've just bought another bottle of Wheel Horse. It's a decent, inexpensive rye.
We attended the Georgia Food and Wine Festival over the weekend and tried quite a few new-to-us items. I can recommend the following:
Viking Alchemy Meadery we liked all that we tried
Fighting 69th Irish Whiskey - never cared for Irish whiskeys before, but this was very smooth and not heavy on the peat flavor.
Atlanta Hard Cider Co. - very nice ciders with a good balanced flavor, not overpowering like so many of the hard ciders on the market
Chloe- prosecco that was very good
Legent Bourbon- our first opportunity to taste this one and we were surprised how much we liked it. Lots of toffee/caramel notes which we didn't expect
These events are always fun and a good way to try new beverages.
Prairie Artisan ales "Buntastic" a double pastry stout with 50 lbs of carrot cake in the recipe. (At Wichita Falls brewery, guest tap.) 13% ABV and too much cinnamon and cream cheese. Not happy with my choice.
