I prefer Gentleman Jack to Markers Mark...but that is simply personal preference.

No matter what...it's going to be heads above Jim Beam.

It amazes me that Jim Beam white is the best selling whiskey in the world. Jack Daniels old nr7 isn't anything special but I can at least understand why it's popular. It's smooth and I take no shame in admitting that it's great for moments where you just want to have fun. But Jim Beam white, has barely any taste at all and is probably not as smooth either. I guess most people just dumb it into soda or something.

Default Why is maker's mark so popular?

So I just had my first glass after hearing many good things about it. I don't get it.

It's not bad, it's just very generic. I would even go as far as to argue that even Jack Daniels old nr7 is better. But it's not like I would care if it were priced the same as Jack Daniels. But it isn't. It's considerably more expensive (at least where I bought it) and yet it just tastes like low-grade bland whiskey to me. Oh, and don't get me started on that god damn wax.

How did the whiskey get so popular? What is it's big appeal?

I think it's marketing, and they fact that they got in pretty early on the Bourbon resurgence that started maybe 10-15 years ago. And it's not a bad whiskey, I think- just kind of overpriced for what it is. At a lot of bars with limited selection it is the best option, too.

OK, so Maker's Mark HAS great marketing (we get Christmas gifts every year), but that's I not why it's my favorite. My DH and I have visited the bourbon trail, so we know our bourbon.
We visited friends and took a few kinds of bourbon- new and old. We went to a super comprehensive liquor store in Florida and bought a few selections, and had a taste test with some other friends, and Maker's Mark won.

Are you sure your friends actually like whiskey? I have noticed that most casual drinkers like bland and generic whiskey which has led me to believe that that casual whiskey drinkers like dull stuff mostly because it doesn't scare them rather than because it's any good. Whiskey after all is an obtained taste so most people who aren't heavily into it will probably just want something that is simple and inoffensive.

Market saturation? I don't know, I've never had Maker's Mark. Bourbon in general isn't my first choice.

I would say the marketing and just plain hype. It's good bourbon, but not exceptional bourbon by any means. I recently had some Four Roses that was simply killer and costs less.

In fact- I enjoy Gentleman Jack as much as I do MM.

I am thinking about trying Makers Mark next. How does it compare with Gentlemen Jack? I thought GJ was pretty good but I also thought it was a bit too sweet for my taste.
Gentleman Jack is indeed a fairly benign bourbon. It's smooth and drinkable, but not too much on the taste scale. Makers Mark has a more robust flavor, however my tastes prefer other bourbons. Not saying MM is bad, but bourbons like Knob Creek or Four Roses Single are a little better to my taste buds.

I drink Gentleman Jack and it usually graces my cabinet for occasions I want a small drinkable bourbon.
