Rance,

Did you take this photo (of the bear baring its teeth up the tree)? What was the context?

All right, arctic...I've got some sort of morbid curiosity going on about how you cooked your skunk.

I'm in Angoon now. I asked a couple of people I work with if they knew of any bear recipes and was told that they don't hunt bear here (Natives). Since I've been here (5 days), I've eaten locally killed/caught seal, deer, salmon, halibut and cockles. There are no moose on the island so I won't get to partake of that on the island.

I've not been here but a few days and am not an expert by any means so take this with a grain of salt. The island is very much a forest except for a small area. I don't see how anyway could raise livestock in any number here. AND, if they did, it would just be food for the hundreds (1600+) bear that live on the island. Hunting and fishing is the only way to get fresh meat other than having it shipped in and paying a fortune for it. I haven't been to the local store as of yet but I was warned that everything will be very expensive. Not a good thing for a community that has little local employment opportunities.
I'm glad that you made it and that you got groceries in Juneau.

Livestock in SE isn't that feasible; though there are some horses in Ketchikan and Juneau. The rain leaches the nutrients out of the grass.

Grizzly is rarely eaten; it's pretty much impalatable though I suppose that with some creativity it could be rendered less so.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine in the Susitna let me look at one of his great-great Aunt's journals; they were among the first white people to live in the Upper Su. He really needs to donate them to museum; they were quite interesting. I think that's where I got the recipe for apple-cider pie with the bear grease crust; that family planted a few crabapple trees.

Is Rob here, Barkely?

I honestly don't know how to describe it, but the meat had a bit of a skunk smell to it. Then the smoke from the fire (was burning some dead hickory branches) added something to it. If that says anything. It was disgusting, that's the best way to describe it...
