So here goes..

I'm about to graduate from college. I'm going to graduate school next fall. I plan on moving to Alaska for the summer. Two friends and I plan on living there from May-August. We're trying to figure out where to live first. We want to go somewhere where we know we can all find jobs and lodging. This is why we're mainly considering the three largest cities.
To be honest, our search is not limited to the mentioned cities. Any good advice for ANYWHERE in Alaska is appreciated.

I know there are plenty of summer jobs at cruise destinations with tour companies, but we're not sure if that's what we're looking for. Dorm rooms, chipper tour guide talk, etc. Does anyone know if there are usually other regular seasonal jobs available at cruise destinations?

We plan on flying to wherever it is we go. We won't have a vehicle initially but are willing to invest in one if we have to. We'd rather not, if possible, but we understand it may have to happen. We're outdoorsy, social people and we'd like to be somewhere where we can work and have a good time. Any suggestsions? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

you will love alaska!! however anchorage may be your better choice. i am from fairbanks, low population...mostly military, and although growing still not a big town...the hospital is the biggest employer with a couple of tourist traps next in line...beware it is expensive to live here...lowest price for decent apartment 650.00 to 800.00 for 1 bedrm...hamburger about 4 bucks and higher per pound, veggies expensive too..the upside last year we got a walmart..w****ay!

Default Alaska Experience

I moved to Knoxville from Alaska about seven years ago. We lived in Juneau and I can say with no hesitation that it is an incredibly beautiful place with plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors. The major downside is that you are landlocked. You can only get there by plane or ferry and once you are there you must rely on the same source of transportation to get back out. In your situation I might elect to go to Alaska's mainland, to Fairbanks or Anchorage because you will have more opportunities for employment as well as the chance to see the different terrains and cultures the state offers. If you have the opportunity to visit Juneau though..don't pass it up. It is gorgeous. There are dozens of hiking trails and things like that. Enjoy!!

I actually got to visit Juneau this summer. That's why it is on my list. I absolutely loved it there. The only setback I saw is exactly what you mentioned. The only way to Juneau is plane, boat, or birth canal!
