Any one have info and advice on finding or what it is like to work at a remote location. The kind of job I am asking about is where you fly out to the job and work two to four weeks then fly back with a week or two off. I have a background in operating and maintaining heavy equipment and have been looking at moving to nome.
Chris

The best jobs will be found by actually living in AK. They do offer some jobs to people that are in high demand fields that don't live in AK but if you really want a good job, move up first.
Remember they may need you NOW and if you are still in MI or where ever you may not be able to be there the day after they call you if there is an opening.

Sorry, but for camp jobs like he's asking about...it's not necessarily the truth that he needs to move up here first.

Well, maybe he can get the job, and then move up here. Otherwise he would be spending quite a chunk of his earnings on travel alone, which by the way, is avery expensive in Alaska. In fact, it costs more to fly within Alaska than to fly to Seattle, but still, quite expensive.

The kind of rotation job he is asking about typically pays travel expenses.

I guess I misunderstood. I friend of mine has such a job, but he does not get paid for travel. He flies on a prop. airplane, stays out there for two weeks, and comes back to Fairbanks for two weeks. He X-Rays pipelines.

That's interesting, Ray. I hope it doesn't cost your friend too much to get out there.

Everyone I know who does a rotation job gets their travel expenses paid.

Seems all the slope companies are different as far as pay for travel days. Some get it, some don't. Remarkably I get paid the day before I fly to work. To cover my travel expense to Anchorage and hotel if needed the night before.
Those traveling to the slope on the BP/Conoco Charter Jets don't have the worry...but some outfits are using the smaller air service like PennAir now. I have no idea if employees have to buy their own ticket or get reimbursed or not. Some get paid the day they leave...but not the day they fly up here. Some get paid the day they come up and the day they leave. Although I actually only work 14 days a hitch...I get paid for 16. Some of the guys that live outside have to pay their own way to Alaska and back. Some get paid back for their tickets. And some get paid the day the fly up to Alaska. It's all different and slightly confusing to me.

Those flying out to the mines I don't know about either. I'll have to ask my buddy that works at Red Dog what he does.
