There is no peer pressure to be thin in many southern communities. If all your friends and family is fat there is little reason you will not let your self go also.

but isn't the fact that it looks gross enough of a motivator to want to lose weight?

No because being overweight has become the new normal in their world (subculture). People generally do not change or work hard at something unless peer or family pressure makes them.

see i guess that's where we (new york) differ from the south...there is a lot of pressure to be thin and beautiful here...i guess partially to the amount of entertainment that goes on here. Also, though, New York City is a walking city. I'm sorry, but fat people get picked apart here. besides...it's very unhealthy.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I just wish more people were thin b/c being fat is unhealthy and the american lif expectancy is getting shorter. many european and asian countries are surpassing us.

I have. Stayed near Grand Central @ 42nd so I had a wide variety of foods all around me. "Little Italy" was probably the best (of NYC) IMO, but I wouldn't say it's better than southern food.

One of the biggest threats to this world today is the aging population of the entire world. What we should be doing is trying to lower the life expectancy all over the world.

For starters, if you're over 60, you won't be allowed to use your seat belts.
Free cigarettes to the elderly. Any other ideas to lower the life expectancy?
