It depends on where you want to live and what kind of lifestyle you want to enjoy. It also depends on which city, town or surburb you choose. If you live in Anniston, Gadsden, Tuscaloosa or most other medium or smaller towns you can get by pretty well. If however, if want to live in Mt. Brook, Vestavia or the eastern shore of Mobile bay that won't be enough.

The cost of living is generally lower in Alabama than most of the nation but that is almost entirely due to real estate costs and property taxes if you own property. Don't expect a big difference in everything else. I've found food and other retail, restaurant meals ect...to be about the same here as anywhere else. In fact it may even be more. Alabama makes up for low property taxes with high sales taxes, on almost everything.

The overall CoL in Alabama is cheap. You can easily find a good apartment in Montgomery, Mobile, and B-Ham with that price. $30K is actually a good salary to start off with in Alabama, so you should be ok.

You should be able to live comfortably. It's a lot easier to afford a home or rent than in many other states, but what kills me about living in Alabama is the sales tax at the grocery store!
