. . .
The "repper" may actually be trying to "report" the post, not be using the rep function to deliver a nasty message. Sometimes, of course, that *is* what they're trying to do.

I'm not downplaying the complaints of those who've received nasty messages with reps. But, perhaps admins should re-arrange the icons; it's easy for a poster to think s/he's reporting a post, complete with the reasons the post is against the TOS (so clearly a nasty message), but have clicked on the icon that's right next to it, that gives rep points.

All they have to do is just read the text in the rep box when they open it. It could not be any clearer that you're leaving a comment to the poster, and not a moderator.
you're right, but clearly a lot of people don't pay attention to what they're doing and don't bother to read the text (as evidenced by bowie's post).
it's not a big deal when you're trying to rep someone through the report form, but if you do the opposite you could get in trouble for harassment.
Usually, harassing messages I've seen contain second-person words like "you" which make it clear that they're intended for the poster and not a moderator. I don't believe report-sent-as-rep-message is a widespread issue.
I've only seen the opposite (rep message reports) a few times in about 15 months of moderating here. (Less than 5.)
I received a semi-nasty message along with a rep point. While I didn't really appreciate the comments, I loved getting the rep boost. I'll take my rep points anyway I can get them, except via repping games. That's just wrong!

Are you referring to the rep you received on April 1? I looked a few months farther back than that and didn't see anything else on your list that was questionable.
Actually, I think I was thinking of 8-05-2007, but like I said, it was only semi-nasty. I was mostly disappointed because it was rep boost, but it came with buzzkill message. But I'm a big boy; I'll live.
Could a mod look into a rep I got on 09-17-2009 at 02:58 PM? I think that it falls under the harassment through repping categorey. Thanks.
I will check it out and take appropriate action, if necessary.
