In eastern Canada. Right at sunset, there were no US 50Ks coming in yet from the daylight; and a very uncrowded AM dial to the east of us. So European AMs would come across the dark Atlantic quite regularly during that hour or two in winter. Radio Luxembourg was popular

AM signal bounce back down from the ionosphere in the dark. But when activated by sunlight, AM signals go right through and out into space.

Driving in the Dakotas years ago, I didnt expect any FM at all. But I got about 5 stations, all of which turned out to be from South Carolina. Some rare atmospheric inversion was bouncing them all back dow. TV channels 2-13 are next to FM band and do the samr. Some hot summer nights, we used to get Cincinnati TV in Wisconsin.

Did you know you can tune nearby Channel 6 on on older FM radios, down below 88?

What kind of antenna do you use? Outdoor? Preamp or just indoor antenna?

All those were just common household receivers using built-in antennas.

That's pretty good. Now you can get better antennas to improve reception.

Most radios only go 10x10 so getting these stations is not easy unless you have one that goes 1x1..

My DX440 goes 1x1 (Radio shack)
Ok I see.
I got some old radio Shack scanners and Uniden scanners from the 90's, a Pro 2005, 2006, 2022, 2052, Pro-93 handheld and a few other trunking handhelds. Back in those days one was able to monitor cordless phones, baby monitors, CB Radio and analog cellular phones. Not anymore. The frequencies were trunked EDACS, Motorolla. These scanners are at least 33 years old but they still work with departments that use analog and can still pick up National Weather Service, Hams, aircraft, CB Radio and Marine band. Cannot pick up P-25 or digital signals. Kind of fun to see what you can get 33+ years later with this equipment and see how things have changed from analog to digital encryption

In the 2000s, as a months long leg on a trip, I drove all the way across Canada (Vancouver to St. John's (took the ferry to get to Newfoundland)...only came back into the U.S. once (in Michigan) for a few days)....and XM Radio 'saved me'.

AM 690 CBC out of Mexico ( estimated 450 miles )

AM 730 CHMJ out of Vancouver ( estimated 830 miles )

AM 850 KOA out of Denver ( estimated 930 miles )

AM 930 KSEI out of Boise Idaho ( estimated 530 miles )

AM 1030 KTWO out of Casper Wyoming ( estimated 905 miles )

AM 1040 WHO out of De Moines Iowa ( 1530 miles ) My record!!!

AM 1060 KCMX out of Calgary Canada ( estimated 1030 miles ) Very clear!!

I stopped at AM 1230 for now, boy that frequency have a lot of "wobble" at night!!

Honorable mentions
KFI 640
KOMO 1000
KDXU
KTAR
KNX 1070
I can get and receive pretty easy where I'm located. I would love to try to pick up WBAP out of Fort Worth Texas, but the 50KW transmitters for KGO AM 810 are 30 miles away (exactly ). How I was able to able AM 800 from Vancouver is a mystery.

You have me beat, but I've probably come fairly close to that pulling in KGO 810 out of the San Francisco Bay Area at night.

At the moment, that is, right now. An American station at around 25 meters. It's drifting in and out, and I'm in the UK.

Edit; Oops, it's gone.

Are you able to listen to 74 AM in San Francisco, CA? I listen to this station for traffic reports on every 8th minute on the hour.
