Health Care - El Paso, Texas

Health Care - Health And Wellness

El Paso has a unique public health situation because of its desert climate and its immediate geographical proximity to Ciudad Juárez. Because so many people cross the border between the U.S. and Mexico on a daily basis, local health departments such as the municipal Department of Public Health and the U.S.–Mexico Border Health Commission work tirelessly to promote better standards of living and decrease the incidents of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases transmitted between the two countries. Dehydration, sun and heat stroke, rattlesnakes, and scorpions are just some of the health risks present in the El Paso area, but luckily the city has an excellent health care system to tend to the needs of all residents. El Paso’s hospitals are widely considered to be excellent both in terms of facilities and service. The sole general hospital in the city is University Medical Center, which boasts the only Level I trauma center in El Paso, while one of the foremost medical institutions in the area is the Texas Tech University–Paul Foster School of Medicine.

Despite these great facilities, El Paso’s health situation is not without fault. In 2007, El Paso County had more than twice the national rate of individuals living below the federal poverty level and it consistently rates well below the national average of uninsured citizens. Still, El Paso County remains one of the lowest Texas counties in terms of cancer mortality rates and has better immunization rates than both the Texas and national averages. Interestingly, El Pasoans smoke nearly 7 percent less than most Americans and likewise the incidence of lung cancer in the county is far lower than the national average. All in all, El Paso is a healthy place and the year-round sunshine leads to many health benefits, as the city is full of outdoor sports and healthy activities.
