Description: At Fort Worth’s northeast corner, the 8,738-acre lake brings crowds for waterskiing, fishing, and swimming. Marinas are found along the 200 miles of shoreline, and there are hiking-and-biking trails on the east side at Eagle Mountain Park.

32. Fort Woof Dog Park

Description: Fort Worth’s first fenced off-leash dog park sits on the east side of the city. Two large fenced areas for dogs to roam include one for dogs 40 pounds and more and a separate area for dogs weighing less than 40 pounds. People sit at picnic areas (but no food is allowed in the park) or at park benches while pups play. There are water stations for two- and four-legged visitors, as well as numerous poop-disposal locations supplied with plastic bags. Rules are strictly enforced; check the Web site for the list, which includes keeping dogs on-leash until they’re inside the entry and making sure dogs wear current vaccination and city tags.

Description: Barely inside the city limits, the FWNC&R surprises with its wilderness qualities. You’ll discover forest, prairie, and wetlands here on 3,600 acres, with a wealth of native flora and fauna and unlimited opportunities to revel in the countryside. Wander on more than 20 miles of hiking trails, where you’ll see dozens of bird species, buffalo, and the occasional raccoon and possibly fox. Naturalists on staff at the on-site Hardwicke Interpretive Center will give you pointers and help you make the most of your visit. The center sponsors canoe trips, too.

Description: An 8,500-acre lake about 40 minutes southwest of Fort Worth, Lake Granbury is big for fishing, camping, and picnicking. Its shoreline has become the setting for many a retiree’s dream home.
