Description: This Roman Catholic seminary features the Eugene H. Maly Memorial Library, with more than 94,000 volumes in theology, Biblical studies, pastoral counseling, bioethics, and other religious studies. The rare book collection dates from the 13th century. The library is open to the public.

Description: Certainly the source in the city for books by and about painters, sculptors, and other artists, the Cincinnati Art Museum Library is a much-used resource by artistic types. You may enter at no cost if you have a valid library card from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. No borrowing allowed, but there is a photocopier on-site.

Description: The Historical Society Library dates from 1831 and includes 40,000 books, 50,000 pamphlets, 2,500 maps, 2,300 periodicals, and 6 million feet of film, much of it relating to regional history. Rarities include books bound in jeweled silver, a flat wooden map of the world, and the Hauck Rare Book Collection. There are also extensive genealogical resources, including Cincinnati birth, baptism, marriage, death, cemetery interment, and property ownership records spanning two centuries, as well as many local high school and college yearbooks. Upstairs in Tower A is one of the nation’s largest libraries devoted to railway history.

Description: This treasure trove, operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and open to the public, is devoted to helping in genealogical research. Major databases include the Ancestral File, a church-managed computer file that contains millions of names and their links to ancestors and descendants. The International Genealogical Index lists places and dates of birth for millions of people, as well as marriages, dating from the 1500s. And the Social Security Death Index lists millions who have died in the United States since 1962.

Description: For 151 years, a group of about a hundred book lovers has met on Monday night at this brick structure in the heart of downtown. Each meeting begins with a glass of wine, then it’s on to the Reading Room (adorned with the Shakespeare motto, here comes one with a paper). And indeed, each member must, within every two years, produce a paper on some literary topic. Members include former Scripps Howard CEO Bill Burleigh, former Enquirer editorial page editor Thom Gephart, and former Post columnist Nick Clooney. The club also counts two former presidents, Rutherford B. Hayes and William Howard Taft, among its former members. About four openings become available each year; anyone interested in joining must be sponsored by a current member.
