Address: 223 Cathedral Place

Description: Because the Spanish government wanted converts as well as gold from New Mexico, the Catholic faith played a vital role in the area’s history (see our Worship and Spirituality chapter). This unimposing little museum features historic documents, photographs, and artifacts that trace the development and role of the Catholic Church in New Mexico. You can see the beautiful chalice used by Archbishop Jean Lamy when he said mass more than a century ago and the proclamation formally re-establishing the Spanish presence and Catholicism in Santa Fe, dated June 20, 1692, and signed by Don Diego de Vargas. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is by donation.
