Jazz In June - Tours & Attractions - Omaha, Nebraska

City: Omaha, NE
Category: Tours & Attractions

Description: A Lincoln tradition for 20 seasons, Jazz in June is Lincoln’s summer music mainstay. Thousands of people gather each Tuesday in June to listen to live jazz outside the Sheldon Museum of Art. The Phillip Johnson–designed building makes an artistic backdrop for local and national jazz and blues acts.Concertgoers gather early for the free 7 p.m. concerts, and a festive atmosphere surrounds the shows, which often have a theme; the 2010 concerts had a “Havana Nights” theme, and Cuban sounds and Latin jazz were both on the menu. Usually, the series theme ties in with an exhibition in the adjacent Sheldon Museum. The concert organizers make sure the event is green, and recycle bins are everywhere on the lawn. Drinks and food are available through a number of vendors, and the Jazz in June Marketplace starts before the concert begins, at 5 p.m. Local vendors sell their wares on the street next to the green space. Because UNL is a dry campus, alcohol is not sold or allowed on site. Dogs are not permitted unless they are service animals.
