Description: Founded in 1938, the Omaha Star is the area’s only African American newspaper. It’s been publishing for more than 70 years and has a circulation of about 30,000. Mildred Brown founded the newspaper in 1938, and she’s the first African American woman to found a newspaper in the state’s—possibly the nation’s—history. Brown died in 1989 and her niece, Marguerita Washington, took over the paper, which is now available at a number of locations throughout North and central Omaha.
