4. The 1811 Lincoln County Museum And Old Jail

City: Wiscasset, ME
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (207) 882-6817
Address: Federal St.

Description: In a residential area packed with old homes is this old penitentiary—the state prison until the one in Thomaston was built—and woe be to anyone who got stuck in here. The jail dates back to 1809-1811 and was in use until the 1950s. In its history it has been home to your usual thieves and murderers, but it was also used to imprison French sailors, back when privateering was happening off the coast, as well as British POWs. The interior consists largely of big, cold granite blocks with barred windows and iron doors, and there is still some neat graffiti—ships, names, dates, and poetry—scratched on the walls. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday in July and August and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. with varying hours in the off-season.
