Description: This popular 34-acre outdoor museum has been open since 1970; it moved to its present location in 1999. Train buffs will revel in the displays of more than 80 pieces of retired rolling stock including vintage steam locomotives and historic wooden cars. Tour the 1911 Pullman used by President Harding. You can even take a train ride in a restored caboose that traverses the museum’s half-mile loop track. The museum is open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission costs $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, and $4 for ages 2 to 12. Your admission price pays for train rides.

Description: Originally the home of Howard Candler, the eldest son of Coca-Cola’s founder, Callanwolde now is a fine arts center. A nonprofit foundation directs a variety of arts programs, including dance, drama, painting, photography, pottery, textiles, writing, and more. In 1996, just prior to the Olympics, the center was renovated to house the Italian delegation. New plantings and a restructuring of the greenhouse area were just a few of the changes made.

Description: Find this exhibit in Special Collections on the eighth floor of Georgia State University’s Pullen Library South. Music lovers will enjoy seeing displays of awards, manuscripts, photos, and letters from the life of this composer of enduring music. Savannah-born Mercer wrote such standards as “Blues in the Night,” “Jeepers Creepers,” and “Come Rain or Come Shine.” Tour the Johnny Mercer Exhibit during school hours.

Description: This permanent display on the main floor of Atlanta-Fulton County’s Central Library features reproductions of the author’s pages from the Gone With the Wind manuscript, a movie script, the coat Mitchell wore while volunteering with the Red Cross, her library card, and other rare memorabilia. View this exhibit during regular Central Library hours: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 2 to 6 p.m.
