65. Indian Peaks Wilderness

City: Boulder, CO
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: There are numerous backpacking options in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The Arapaho Pass Area begins at the Fourth of July trailhead (see above under “Hiking in the Mountains”) and offers many choices on both sides of the Continental Divide. The trail climbs 3 miles to the 11,900-foot pass and drops down on the other side to Caribou Lake, where it continues southwest over Caribou Pass to Columbine Lake. To reach Fourth of July trailhead, travel west from Nederland on Highway 72 to the town of Eldora. County Road 130 begins at the west end of town. The Fourth of July trailhead is 5 miles farther (take the right fork at the Hessie intersection).

66. Pawnee Pass (Indian Peaks)

City: Boulder, CO
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: The climb to Pawnee Pass (12,541 feet) starts at Brainard Lake on the extremely popular Isabelle Lake trailhead, on the right side of Long Lake, but the crowds thin as the going gets rougher and higher. This 4.5-mile hike is quite steep for the last 2 miles. An interesting backpacking loop leads over the pass to Monarch Lake and returns to the east side of the Divide over Arapaho Pass—you’ll need two cars or a drop-off and pickup arrangement to complete this one.
