Description: If a bathtub-style dip is more your style, try out the therapy pool at the Mapleton Center of Boulder Community Hospital. The indoor pool is kept at a balmy 94 degrees. It is used by patients at the rehab hospital but is also open to the public for open swim—call (303) 441-0542 for hours—and lessons. Drop-in fees are $9.25 for ages 18 to 59 and $6.75 for adults older than age 60; punch cards are available. Children younger than age 12 are not allowed in the open swim, but swim classes are offered for kids and adults.

Description: South Boulderites can enjoy a beautiful bike path that heads northeast from Martin Park, on the corner of Broadway and Table Mesa Drive. Access the path at the far northeast end of the park. Called the Bear Creek Greenway, the path winds along Bear Creek under highways and eventually over Foothills Parkway, where cyclists have the choice of heading farther east on the Centennial Bike Path or heading north across Arapahoe Avenue and connecting with the Boulder Creek Path.

Description: Macho cyclists can tackle Flagstaff Mountain—a real muscle-buster right in town, due west on Baseline Road. You’ll be hunched over the handlebars on the way up, but the zoom down provides some beautiful vistas of the Boulder Valley, and the Chautauqua Dining Hall (303-440- 3776) waits at the bottom of the hill.

22. Jamestown

Description: For a good mountain ride, head for Jamestown (17 miles from Broadway and Canyon). Take Broadway up Left Hand Canyon (8 miles north of town) and then, after 6 miles, up James Canyon Drive. (Look for mile markers in the canyon.) The picturesque Jamestown Mercantile Cafe (303-442-5847) offers breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Description: To reach Louisville (12 miles from Broadway and Canyon), go south on the bike path along the east side of Broadway to Marshall—south of Boulder—through Marshall and over Highway 170. Cross U.S. Highway 36, make a right onto Dillon Road, then a left onto 96th Street.

To reach Lyons (16 miles from Broadway and Canyon), ride north on Broadway (US 36), which has a wide shoulder part of the way, all the way to Lyons, and turn left at the railroad track. Description: The 17 miles up Boulder Canyon to Nederlands is a strenuous ride. Be cautious—the curving canyon road with its narrow shoulder and speeding cars can be quite hazardous for cyclists. Choose less busy times such as midweek and midday for this ride.

26. Niwot

Description: The ride to Niwot is relatively flat and pastoral, winding past ponds and pleasant countryside (16 miles from Broadway and Canyon). Go north on Broadway to Nelson Road and turn right (for a shorter ride turn right on Neva Road before Nelson). Follow Nelson Road to Highway 73, turn right and go to Niwot Road and turn left; proceed into Niwot. Treppedas Gourmet Market Cafe (303-652-1606) offers a variety of great lunch goodies.

27. Ward

Description: The truly tough can ride all the way up Left Hand Canyon to Ward (23 miles one way from Broadway and Canyon)—all steady climbing from the start of Left Hand Canyon. If you can make it over the final hill out of Ward to the Peak to Peak Highway (Highway 72), great meals, homemade pie, and local ambience await you at the Millsite Inn (303-459-3308), just north of Ward.

Description: The 7-mile East Boulder Trail has a difficulty ranking of moderate. A 2.2-mile level section of the trail goes through a wildlife preserve and past Teller Lake. Then, a 2.7-mile section climbs a mesa on dirt trails and service roads to the Gunbarrel Farm. The Gunbarrel Farm section travels along a dirt service road with moderate grades and turns east at 1.2 miles into the White Rocks area.

30. Greenbelt Plateau Trail

Description: This gentle trail rolls across a mesa top through open grasslands with beautiful views of the foothills. At 1.3 miles, bicyclists may choose to take the dirt path to Community Ditch Trail or continue on the service road to Highway 93.This trail is ranked as easy and covers 1.6 miles on gravel surface road. The Greenbelt Plateau Trail is south of Boulder, on the north side of Highway 128, just east of Highway 93.
