Health Care - Tucson, Arizona

Health Care

Back in 1880 when Arizona was still a territory and every small town and settlement had its neighborly doc or two (who no doubt made house calls), St. Mary’s Hospital opened in Tucson, the state’s first. That same year the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet began their work to provide health care to the settlers of the area, eventually opening another hospital.

Things have changed a great deal since then. Today both of those early hospitals are part of the nationwide Carondelet Health Care System, and Tucson now has about a dozen hospitals, medical clinics, mental health and substance abuse facilities, hospices, alternative medical services, and health spas.

We offer here the major players, as well as some phone numbers you’ll want to keep handy during your stay in the Old Pueblo. (For information on Tucson’s two health spas, Canyon Ranch and Miraval, go to the Accommodations chapter.)
