This is going to be a weird first post for me, but im curious how others would approach this situation.

Just started a contract job. Been there for 3 weeks. I do not like the job. 3 days in office (drive home can take an hour) 2 days at home.

I have a tentative job offer for the govt that I have no idea when it starts. Could be 3 weeks from now or 2 months.

I interviewed for a permanent position and they offered me the job. 4 days working from home, 1 day in the office.

I turned it down telling them I've accepted another job (the government position)

The CFO emailed me several days later asking me if I'd reconsider. Totally took me off guard.

I'm now thinking of taking that job and dumping the contract job, but I feel like it's a "d*ck" move accepting knowing I'll be leaving them in 3 weeks to a couple months.

So.....d*ck move or go for it?

Eh! What you want some else to give you advise on what you should have make in the first place. Sounds like a cop out to me.... wanting some else to decide for you.

Look out for yourself no one else will. Companies will throw you on the street without a second thought the minute it suits them for one reason or another.

Take the job YOU want.

How important is work stability? Who has the best total compensation package? Which gives the best opportunity for advancement and training? There are certainly other questions you should be answering for yourself. Figure out what is important to you and your current and/or future family, and pick the job that best fits your needs.

Do what’s best for yourself. Until you actually start working for the government anything could happen.

Take any offer that you like. Don't think about what may or may not happen in the future. Because it may not happen.

This is business. If they really wanted to ensure you wouldn't jump ship, they'd sign an employment contract with you. But they DON'T, so you need to ensure that you do what's best for YOU.

The government offers a pension and tons of better benefits that any private employer. Working for Uncle Sam is almost as good as winning the lottery. Easy choice.

A "government job" could be anything, city, county, state federal or special purpose district. In general all government jobs have lower pay but better benefits and security, it can vary greatly. If your offer was from an agency with revenue from other sources than tax, such as an airport or utility, I would definitely recommend it. Be aware though that some cities and counties are struggling with budget issues and having layoffs. The federal government will also have layoffs with departments reduced or eliminated as the leadership changes every few years.

"NEW YORK, April 4 (Reuters) - U.S. layoff announcements rose 7% in March to the highest since January 2023, led by technology and government-sector job eliminations, though cuts announced year to date are down 5% from a year ago amid a still-strong job market, a report out on Thursday showed."

Yeah and you don't need to show up mentally.
