With many things here pronounced somewhat closer to the true language, I have often wondered why everyone refers to Isla Vista as eye-la vista, with neither word correctly pronounced. Years ago I was in a Southern Arizona town that had a community with that same name. When I referred to it the way I had always heard it, I was met with belly laughs. I was corrected and told that it is pronounced Eesla Veesta. That would agree with a couple of years of Spanish classes I took, but I have never heard anyone here pronounce it that way. I also spent some time in Central Texas...don't get me started on the way things were pronounced there!
Didn't Sam Yorty pronounce his city Los Ann-gle Es?

I have to ask about a variation, since the topic drew my curiosity: Since Vent-tura is the better (right?) way to pronounce it, has anyone heard it pronounced as Vent-toora?

It is only recently that I have been hearing that, I have heard it on news reports from L.A. stations. I like to guess the locality of people by their dialect, and I am pretty good at it, but I don't know where that comes from.

"Ventoora" is not as bad as "Venchura" (or even "Venchyra") but I don't know any locals who pronounce it that way.

I don't know if I could even venture a guess.

I have used both. I probably say Ven-TU-ra.

No matter how silly people pronounce these names (and I lived in LA so I heard it, too). Sepulveda, anyone? There can never be anything as bad as how I once heard a local pronounce a small town in South Carolina. The name was spelled Debordieu. She called it, swear to god, Debbydoo.

Oh the things I have heard while travelling other places! One of my favorites is a town in Virginia named Buena Vista. There, that is Boona Vista. If you pronounce it any other way, they know you are a "foreigner".

How is ghoti pronounced?

Spoiler
Just like "fish".
Take the f sound of "rough", the i sound from "women", and the sh sound from "function"
Now you know.
