To get an idea for topography, go to maps.google.com on a PC. Hover (don't click) your mouse over the "Layers" icon in the lower-left corner then select "Terrain" when the options window pops up.

You'll see the mountains in the far east, then wide TN River Valley (home to Knoxville and Chattanooga). But even this "flat" valley really isn't "flat", with lots of ridges and valleys.

The western boundary of the valley is the Cumberland Plateau. The Plateau is somewhat unique in that the top is mostly flat(ish) and the steep terrain goes down instead of up. You won't find many jaw-dropping scenic views unless you get to the edge of the plateau. Lots of karst features (caves, waterfalls, springs, sinkholes, etc.).

Moving farther west you enter the Central TN "hill country". It may not look impressive zoomed way out on Google Maps, but I assure you they are quite tall

Parrottsville in Cocke County. Out in the middle of nowhere; 20 minutes from somewhere; and 60 minutes from anywhere.
