I'm glad they are going to AAA-1234 with this redesign, I prefer to keep my letters and numbers separate.

I agree, I never did figure out the format. Numbers and letters were not always in the same place on the plates.

Yes! I said the same thing including the NY comparison. This could have been similar to what we have on top of our TN drivers licenses.

Too funny, how many people here remember when TN had 8 digit driver's license numbers or without a leading zero? Anyone still have a 7 digit driver's license number? I once stopped in a hotel in South Dakota and the check in clerk thought my license was a fake because it looked like the Elvis driver's licenses they were selling on the counter.

This looks a bit like what Missouri proposed to be its 2020-2021 plate, but then wimped out and went with blue on white, which is pretty much the same plate that they have had since 2000, with some very minor variations. The white on blue would be striking, easy to differentiate from the old plate, and high contrast. Good choice, Tennessee!

I can live with it but prefer the current plates. All 3 options were plain and boring. I would have voted for the blue background over the white background but would have rejected all 3 if that was an option.

Do we have to turn in our plates for the new ones or is this just upon renewel?

Population explosion - 7 digits on new plates.

I can't tell if they are keeping the county of residence. They left a spot for it at bottom but none of the examples shows that it is being utilized. Makes me wonder if county of residence is going away.

Just to let everyone know. Received a notice for renewal of my plate (due in January), and was running errands today next to the county clerks office, so stopped in to pay. They can not do the renewal until next month, which also includes issuing the new plate. The state will not allow them to renew with the plate until 1/1, asked about the online renewal, and was told I could, but they will not send the new plate or sticker until next month.

It appears this year New Years Day holiday may be observed Friday Dec 31. The new year begins Saturday. Maybe some offices closed Monday Jan 3? in which case plates may be ready Tuesday Jan 4.

It also appears in most counties the smog test will no longer be required.
