Just watched a Motorweek episode that included a review of the new Impreza. Visually, doesn’t look different. Changes include no more sedan,…hatchback only, and the addition of an RS model with the 2.5L found in the Crosstrek for a modest boost in power.

Yes, the RS trim model is pretty cool, it's kind of a "warm hatch", with upgraded wheels, tires, engine and brakes and "sport-tuned suspension" - though I haven't seen specifics on what that last phrase refers to. It's still more on the mild side rather than wild side, but it's also still an economically priced everyday driver, and that's a good thing.

I used to commute in a MK IV VW GTI with a 180 hp 1.8L turbo. I put 160k miles on it before I sold it and bought a leftover orange MK V GTI. It was 600 pounds lighter than a 2.5 Impreza and had way more headroom and legroom than an Impreza. My 5’2” stepdaughter has a 5 door Impreza. I don’t fit in it.

That's strange. I'm over 6' and find my Impreza wagon very comfortable in head and leg room. To each his own I guess....
Its looks are modestly sharper and more aggressive along with its powertrain and stiffer chassis than its previous generation and it shows. After years of research for a new car this is what I chose and couldn’t be happier. Was looking for a sport wagon and because that unfortunately doesn’t exist in the American auto market went with this sports hatchback. I agree it’s a warm hatch, not a hot hatch but it has a very willing powertrain and is a great ride and handler. The super solid chassis makes for an exceptionally comfortable, quiet and capable feeling ride.
We just finished a 1400 mile road trip from San Diego to Mendocino and back, finally putting some miles on the car after having it for a couple of months and it was just superb. Four days up from LA, Paso, Hearst Castle/San Francisco and Healdsburg/Mendocino - 11 1/2 hours on the road coming back in one fell swoop and the seats, ride and safety systems/ACC are stellar whether driving nearly 80 mph or in stop and go traffic in L.A. Even the super twisty roads through the coastal redwoods proved an easy and fun route for this car. I’m 6’-2”, over 200lbs and fit great in any seat, capacious total cargo capacity- greater than the much larger Lexus LX or V60 - and easy, functional controls, smart HVAC and amazing auto/adaptive lights. We also averaged just under 34mpg and an easy 500 mile range. Not hybrid numbers but plenty great for us.
It’s not perfect, a little more torque would be welcome, it rides kinda low, 5.1” ground clearance, so you have to watch dips and curbs (but it does handle much better than its Crosstrek sister because of it) and a power passenger seat, rear AC vents and power port in the trunk would be nice. But for just a little over $31k fully loaded it’s a hell of car that I anticipate keeping for at least a decade. A lot less than the $47k average being paid for new cars these days. Still have my very analog ‘02 WRX wagon for a more raw driving experience but for day to day this new Impreza RS is the ticket.
