We eat brown gravy over hamburger steak and fries. Yum!

I agree white gravy for anything breaded though.

I'd dare say the South is the only region of the US that has dishes native to this region. There may be a few up north, but the vast majority of their food is influenced by some other culture, primarily European, whereas the dishes native to the South were concocted right here!

what the hec is scrapple!!! i'm from Ohio and have no clue what is. you listed hashbrowns and bagels for the north and all these great southern examples for the starters. way to be biased ;-)

with that being said with such mobility these days amongst people i've found decent pizza down south and have found some really good fried chicken up north. i always hear from fellow northerners, especially those from new jersey how they can't find a decent slice of pizza yet there are plenty of NJ / NY transplants down here who open up shop and sell the exact same slice they sold up north before they came down here.

at the same time go to any big midwestern city i.e. cleveland, ohio and you'll find some of the best fried chicken in both the north and south. why? well during the great migration of blacks to the midwest they brought their culinary skills with them obviously.

personally i'd say the only thing i miss from up north is being able to get buy Faygo POP at the gas station for like a dollar for a 2 liter haha. down here you can only buy faygo at the grocery. up north its tough to find decent seafood IMO. thats why my parents always take home lbs. of shrimp whenever they leave charleston to go back home to Ohio.

Scrapple is almost exclusively a Philly/Eastern Pennsylvania thing.
There is no real "Northern" food. As stated before a lot of the local cuisine in the northeast is working class European ethnic fare like pirogies, stuffed cabbages, pork and sauerkraut, etc.

For that matter "Southern" non-coastal food is just regional poor man's farmers food that African Americans brought north during the great migration.

I was raised on southern food and have learned to love a lot of food in the north - Church lady made halupkis and pirogies are awesome. That said, I have never had BBQ up north that comes close to what you can get in SC.
