This thread confirms it, Columbia. I don't think either Greenville or Charleston can be considered a "best kept secret" given the press they receive. Columbia on the other hand as a city of around 140K has so many amenities and a low cost of living to go with it.

It's hard to say Columbia, the state capitol, is a best kept secret in SC. Its population growth is in line with Greenville and Charleston.

Generally, when I am out of state and say that I am from SC. Most people respond by saying "oh really what part? XYZ ?@ Nine times out of Ten the city they name is not Columbia. When I respond with "Columbia" the response is generally.. they have never been there what is it like etc .....so...it may still be a secret in some circles despite its population in relation to other cities. LOL. Granted they may know where it is and its the Capitol of the state.. USC has a great women basketball team ...but often that is the extent of it...

Read through this thread and on the SC Forum, it's all about Greenville and Charleston. On a national level there's little recognition as well.

I'm sure there are many people who have no knowledge of Greenville. People on this forum are downtown fans so they are more likely to know Greenville.

Historically.. that is why Columbia was created.. the UpState and the Low Country didnt want the Capitol at either end for political reasons..so... Columbia got tagged...though I thought I read somewhere that Statesburg in Sumter County was supposed to be the Capitol but was abandoned because it was in the swamp? My Columbia.... Internationally unknown and widely disrespected...I love my hometown though..Nashville, Austin and Richmond watch out, we are coming for you.

Florence probably shouldn't be a secret given it is one of the few cities on 95 between Savannah and Richmond. Probably a majority of people headed to Myrtle Beach go through it as well.

I think you are right..There was a time when I was in school at FMU and would travel to other colleges out of state.. I would tell them I went to FMU in Florence and they would associated it with 1) oh thats on the way to the beach 2) Darlington Raceway 3) South of the Border... All which have nothing to do with Florence itself but to your point, it was the only "major" city to relate to
