Lowe's Foods' parent company, Alex Lee, acquired W. Lee Flowers, a wholesale grocer and operator of IGA stores. W. Lee Flowers will operate as a subsidiary of Alex Lee.
Lowe's Foods has opened new stores in new markets while closing a quantity of stores that have competed against Harris Teeter, Publix, and Walmart. If in the event Lowe's Foods fails, Alex Lee can concentrate on wholesale distribution and independent stores.
Not in Florence, but the Darlington BI-LO is closing, with a scheduled closing date on or around November 11.
BI-LO continues to close underperforming stores. Hopefully another grocer nearby will fill the gap. I am not sure what other grocers may serve the trade area. Perhaps Food Lion or Walmart? I don't know if Piggly Wiggly, Publix, or Harris Teeter may be near the region.
$65 Million future mixed-use development project on the 300 block of W. Evans Street to include condos, an office complex, and a new parking garage.
Another 2020 project for Downtown to include the city's renovation of the Carolina Theatre on S. Dargan to have hopes to use the theater as a multi-functional theater with tiered seating on the main floor and fixed seating in the balcony. They are envisioning concerts for up-and-coming artists and dinner theater performances and entertainment that will appeal to young adults.
In 2020 we also have Francis Marion University's transformation of the former post office to be an addition health science building.
To be completed in 2019, the FMU Art Gallery, the Leaf Lounge Cigar Bar, and the Lost Cajun Seafood Restaurant. Along with a new downtown event in December called the Chocolate Crawl!

Florence keeps on keeping on .. Please share additional information as it becomes available... I assume the mixed use development is on the site of the old Florentine Apartment building?
I would also love to know where the new hotel is going..Hopefully on a surface lot as opposed to tearing down any historic buildings... maybe over on this site
$65 Million mixed use project was approved by Florence City Council, The Morning News reports that the project will have Condos, a hotel, office spaces and a parking garage.
