I haven't met any Libyans, personally, but I have met lots of Iranians that moved and settled here after the revolution. They tend to be middle aged (~40s-50s). There is a good sized Iranian community in the Bay. And there is a Farsi school in Berkeley and a lot of first generation kids.

There are also quite a few Armenians in the Bay Area as well, but nothing like LA of course for Armenians and Persians.

There is an excellent book written by a local Iranaian (Go Bears!) who moved to CA as a child called Funny in Farsi, about transitioning and growing up with "American values" and traditional parents. Highly recommended book. There was talk of a TV show, but I think that project fell off. http://www.amazon.com/Funny-Farsi-Gr.../dp/1400060400

Here is another similar narrative (but general fiction) by another Cal grad to check out on an Indian American family in Sacramento. http://www.amazon.com/Prayer-Room-Sh...3145332&sr=1-1

The 2 books above are written by Cal and International House alumna (if you want to learn more about international relations and participate, the I-House has programs and such for the students and community. It is basically a dorm that's 50% American/50% international and tries to promote awareness and collaboration).

One thing that surprises me is according to this SF has more Jews than Italaians yet SF has a Italian area in North Beach yet no Jewish district. Here in LA there are many Jewish areas but no longer any Italian ones and its a stereotype that Italians are much more assimilated into the general white populations but I have also heard that the Jewish community in the Bay Area are very secular and have one of the highest intermarriage rate while Jews in LA and NY more far more clannish and ethnocentric.

There is a larger Italian component in the Bay Area than Jewish. Like most European groups they've been here a long time and have generally assimilated and suburbanized long ago. San Francisco may have more people of Italian descent - the figures listed in earlier posts represent Italian born residents vs. the Jewish population not taking country of birth into account. If you added Italian-American to Italian immigrant you'd have a much larger population. Anyway, North Beach really isn't an Italian neighborhood anymore. Columbus Street may still have the restaurants, coffee houses and bakeries, but the residential components are either Chinese or more recent whites residents from all backgrounds.

There are lots of Ethiopians in North Oakland (around Temescal and north). If you drive up Telegraph from about 40th to the southern end of Berkley you'll see at least 10 Ethiopian restaurants. The vast majority of them are on Telegraph, but the are a few more around the Lake and one in Piedmont Ave in Oakland.
There is also a small concentration of Ethiopians in the Western Addition aka Fillmore in San Francisco with a few Ethiopian owned restaurants, corner stores and cafes proudly waving the green, yellow and red flag.

could someone please post more nationalities. I would also like to see rankings of each city with the largest immigrant groups. It seems San Jose is much more diverse than SF and has a lot more Indians, Koreans, Vietnamese, and Iranians. Both cities have large Chinese populations but it seems the majority of immigrants in SF are from either China or Mexico.

SF's latino population is much more diverse than SJ's (2005-2009 estimates, there's nothing for 2010 yet):

SF's latino population is 53% Mexican
SJ's latino population is 87% Mexican

Both cities have diverse Asian populations with SJ being the most diverse, it looks like. SF has lots more Chinese people, and SJ has lots more Vietnamese and Indian people, though SJ has many Chinese people too, and SF has a decent amount of Vietnamese and Indian people as well. I'll post more detailed info on nationalities later.

A super majority of Asians in San Jose come from China, phillipines, and vietnam(this country sits right next to china). Theres a lot more countries in asia then that, so it does not strike me as very diverse in that sense. But it is definately more diverse than some other cities asian populations.

What % is LA hispanic population Mexican. It seems that LA and SF both have a lot of Salvadorians and Guatamalans but SF has more Nicaraguans.
