I think I have finally narrowed my potential retirement destinations (or at least second home locations) down to three: Brooklyn NY, the northern city of my heart; St. Augustine FL, the southern city of my heart, and Virginia Beach VA, the sensible compromise that leaves my heart somewhat unstirred, but ticks all the boxes.

Do whatever you do here!

I fully intend to spend my later years in NYC, so my heavily biased opinion screams Brooklyn.

I'm easily bored and figure that would solve THAT problem.

What will state income tax, sales tax, property tax be for you?
How comfortable are you with the political situation in each location?
How do you feel about the climate in each location?

I vote NY for you. I would not compromise with something in between things.

I think Brooklyn for her, too. You can always drive to VA beach (or a closer beach) but New York has something going on all the time.

Why compromise? Get a flat in Brooklyn AND another in St. Augustine and split your time between the two.

I vote NY too. Don’t compromise otherwise you’ll just be unhappy.

Otterhere, Would you expand on why you think of Brooklyn NY as " the northern city of my heart?"
It's on my radar for family reasons, and I liked the vibe I experienced there, but I lack detailed knowledge of the place. I would appreciate your - and others' - input.

Go wherever you are the happiest. Personally, you couldn't pay me enough money to live in NYC or Florida, but it's not my decision.
