For me it was age 19, I was still in college and got an apartment near school, while working full time for $3/hour. I was also able to buy a brand new car in 1973 ($74/month) and my rent was $150. I bought used furniture, paid all of my own bills including car and renter's insurance. There was no way I would ever move back or ask for anything from my parents, who still had 7 other kids there.

I was 20, I think, I lived with my dad through 2.5 years of college, then wanted to move in with my sister. Dad said fine, but you can take over paying for your college. I had money saved up, so I did.

Feel free to add observations about your own kids as well as yourself. Please no generational bickering, "kids these days" etc. I have to moderate this forum.
18 less than a month after graduating from high school.

After I turned 19 I was drafted and sent to Vietnam.

I was living at home and working to pay my own way through college (that was 63-67) Relied on Mom and Dad for food and essentials. I paid gas and insurance for my 1951 Chevy junker. I worked from age 15 until I retired at 70.

MrsM and I got married in 67 when I was still in college.

We were totally independent. She and I both were working (I was a pharmacy intern working 20-30 hours a week while being a full time student. Plus, I had a side hustle of delivering flowers for a local florist on holidays and whenever my pharmacy schedule allowed)

Since I switched majors, I didn't graduate until 1969. Paid my entire way through college. Plus we covered all of our own expenses.
