Thers is another option available if you don’t want to set up a SS account. I didn’t want to as I didn’ want to unfreeze my credit and I’m 80 years old and not planning on making any changes. Theother option is to place a block on you SS account that prevents any electronic access to you info. No one including you can electronically access your info. To make changes you will have to go to the SS office and present proper ID.

Sorry, you can not apply for Survivor's benefits on-line.

"You cannot report a death or apply for survivors’ benefits online.

I froze my credit years ago, long before the Equifax breach. But I had created my SS profile prior. So since it is established do I need to ever unfreeze my credit before I can obtain benefits?

Good question.

We've had our credit frozen for several years and when I attempted to open an SS online account, I couldn't and was locked out. I gave up, it wasn't that important since I wasn't planning on filing for benefits, but then I read I should so someone else couldn't. I learned if I went into our local SS office with the forms of ID they require, they could give me a temporary password to take home and open an account online. I did that before summer and DH went in two weeks ago so he could open his online account too. A visit to the SS office with proper ID did not require our credit to be unfrozen.

Here is what SSA says about freezes, and opening a mySocialSecurity account.

At https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/, they say:
"If you have a security freeze, fraud alert, or both on your credit report, you can still open a my Social Security account in person by visiting your local Social Security office. You can also temporarily lift your security freeze or fraud alert to create your account online, and then reinstate it as needed."

The reason for this is because during the on-line account opening process, they ask you questions based on info in your credit history. Like "where did you live in 1980 ?"

SS said the same thing to me, i got a new bank account and I called up to change the new info and they said because the new information is not the same as the old information I have to go into the office, which is classic response from Social Security customer service.

They do the exact same thing with a change of address, I verified every previous address I ever had but no luck. I found the reps are a little more cooperative if you call before they close. More than likely at that time the reps are not as afraid of being monitors by some kind of supervisory quality control.

So I have to go into the office to update my banking info and get a online account. Keep in mind I was able to log in until my claim was denied. I was able to log in to check the status of my claim, then they kicked me off the site after the claim was denied and I haven't been able to log in since. Even after my claim was successfully appealed.

I wonder if the My Medicare site works on the same system. Now that I received my new card (without the SS # on it) I thought about using that to check claims etc. I didn't use it before because I refuse to put any part of my SS number onto any website, ever.

I froze my reports on all four of the reporting agencies after the Equifax debacle.

Just want to share my experience, five years after the original post. A few weeks ago I tried to apply for medicare online, but found I couldn't sign up an online account with the message "We cannot verify the information you provided". I found this thread but don't think my credit is frozen unless Experian froze it. I went to social security office 30 mins before the open and there were only a few people before me. However, after 3 hours I was still waiting. I had to leave, so I asked to schedule an appointment and got one in about two months. It is hard to believe that after five years there is still no better solution. I tried to unfreeze my credit from Experian, but got an error from their unfreeze request website.

My question is: how do I check if my credit is frozen at Experian? If mine is frozen, does the online signup work immediately once I unfreeze it at Experian? Do a couple need to unfreeze both credits? For medicare application, do a couple need to file two applications or just one?

In answer to your last question each of you must file for Medicare separately. Personally I would never even try to apply for either Medicare of Social Security online. I would always go in, which in fact my husband and I did.
I have no idea if your credit is frozen or not, usually not unless you yourself froze it.

To reach Experian call: 1-877-284-7942 and choose the prompt for general inquiries.

My husband has his credit frozen with Experian (and all of the credit agencies). We went to Social Security Office to create a my account for both of us. After that, even though his credit records are frozen, he was able to sign up for Medicare online through his my account.
