So your concerns with Reno boil down to crappy schools and people not being too friendly and general agreement with other negative comments?

Just trying to keep things clear. Maybe there should be a thread for 'things people don't like about Reno'.. this thread seems to be getting a bit off topic.

crappy schools, rude, cold, and unfriendly people, very agressive drivers.

That's about it in a nutshell.

interesting I find the people here very nice, and the drivers are much better then the California drivers. Told we have some great public schools out here.

Maybe you come off negative and need to step out of the box and re-evaluate yourself.

We've (my wife and I) thought maybe we're just getting a bad run of things and have thought about it but found others who feel the same way. One lady we met has two daughters who now live in California and won't even come back for a visit they hate Reno so much. Growing up here they had nothing but bad experiences with the people here. We also have other experiences. How about this, at my work at a local casino I would, at least 3 times a week or more, would have someone trying to pass me in the parking garage. In the parking garage? So impatient they cannot drive like a human as there are pedestrians in there that could get killed from such antics? No, I'm right on target here. We have had poor experiences on a weekly basis.

We like the area and the closeness of cool things to do and would stay but just can't handle the people. They suck, sorry.

I have to jump in on this...People in Reno suck? South Meadows a ghetto in 10 years? WTF?!!! Where are you from, or where have you ever been that people don't suck? There are nice and mean people everywhere, duh. It doesn't matter where you go, unless you live in complete isolation (I can think of some areas in Nevada that will accomplish that goal for you), you will have to deal. There is no perfect place and if you think there is, you will always be disappointed. The economy in Reno definitely sucks, I will give you that. That is because of a strict adherence to the good ole boy network and Mormon favoritism/nepotism that worked for Reno for so many years and now only serves to turn it into a ghost town-not a ghetto. The dude who said that is really a jerk. He has no statistical or empirical data which to draw from to back up that statement-he just "feels" that way. Gee, thanks, now shut up.
The schools are 49th in per pupil expenditures-not in test scores! I know some kids who get straight A's in Advanced Placement Chemistry who would argue with you about how lousy you think their schools are. Our schools do a lot with a little and that pretty much sums up Reno, and Nevada really, the best.
In Northern Nevada, we also have the best weather in the country. No bugs as big as Volkswagens and pretty much no humidity.
The drivers who really mess things up tend to always have California license plates, IMO. The people who are rude, cold, and mean also tend to have recently removed their California license plates, IMO. The people who fight and kill for the chance to addict our kids to methamphetamine generally come from either Mexico or California, or both, IMO.

I would agree that Reno is a nice place "GEOGRAPHICALLY" and geographically only. I lived in California for 6 years and didn't have the crappy, over aggressive drivers Reno has so you can blame it on who ever you want to. My wife and I talked about it over and over again. Moving an entire house is no small decision and costs a bundle. But in the end, and on a daily basis we run into an excessively large percentage of Rude, Cold, Selfish people. SORRY!! And the schools? Weekly solicitation for funds, donations. ABSOLUTELY NO CONTACT WITH THE TEACHER REGARDING OUR CHILDS EDUCATION after contacting the teacher several times!!!! And this is with Caughlin Ranch, which is supposed to be a good school.

I can think of only one other place as bad or worst than Reno and that's the Atlantic City NJ area.

That sounds like my area and I don't even live in Nevada.

Default In the Reno area...Tahoe is a better choice.

People who are affected by their environment probably wouldn't find Reno to be very pleasant. Real estate and traffic are reasonable, which is why I moved to Reno, but after a year I left. If you feel the aliveness and a depth of connection to San Francisco and Tahoe, you would probably feel disconnected in Reno. The general character of Reno lacks integrity and there is little natural beauty there. These things seem to affect the mindset of people living there and there is an overall ugliness about many people in Reno. Certainly there are good people there, but not enough...and I found living there to be intolerable. In the Reno area, Tahoe is a much better choice...and you can commute to Reno or Carson for work. If you are not affected by your environment, you may find Reno tolerable.

What do you mean 'lacks integrity'? You come here, make one post which boils down to calling Reno and it's people names like a little child.

It sounds to me like you have a serious psychological problem if the "environment" affects you so much.
