To an extent I can agree with this. But life as we know it now has changed more than it had at any other point in human history. A great portion of our common knowledge was utterly unknown and unimaginable in previous periods of human life. There may be new myths that come up, but in comparison to what exists now I assume they will be kind of like what youtube is to the film industry.

Which I actually think would be a good thing. I would much rather have several little myths than one great big domineering one.

>> then the belief in the afterlife: the spiritual life following death and the disintegration of the material body.

While the atheism is not any doctrine in fact, if we contemplate the subject:
Atheism is only a mess: no god, no purpose no life after death, no recompense: so the good-doer will be the same and equal with the evil-doer in reward and recompense: because both will be dust and that's it.

This is in the Quran 11: 24
The explanation:
(The likeness of the two parties [: unbelievers and believers] is as the man blind and deaf, and the man who sees and hears; are they equal in likeness? Will you [people] not be admonished?)

Man after Death (http://www.quran-ayat.com/m/index.htm - broken link)
Why does there need to be a point to life in the first place?

And how do we define a doer of good vs. a doer of bad? The good and bad things that we do are subject to the civilization that we are in. Something good here is bad across the ocean.
