Well, to make a distinction, it actually isn't honoring the specific day and it isn't about one day being more important than another. The focus is on what will make people recall the life of Jesus during these 40 days.

So a day is given to start that off, and it is, as is tradition in the Bible (the number 40 thing), 40 days before Easter. When people do something together it tends to reinforce that thing so yes, a day to start the season is given.

It is otherwise just Wednesday, yes.

Someone mentioned Saint Teresa of Avila, reading from her books while observing Lent. Same here. I take a little time daily to read spiritual books for the soul. It's very comforting, especially for my interior life. It's a very personal thing. Observing Lento also, it's very personal.

These saints, their books and lives inspire and help me to work on uncovering the true nobility of the soul.

Lent doesn't have to be a "giving up" of sorts. It can also be a "taking on".

That is, some 'addition' to our lives, that may not be necessarily what we'd want to do.

How about for Lent, if I dedicate saying ONE Rosary a day? Or, taking out the trash without complaint for the next 40 days?

Or, instead of criticizing my neighbor, praying for them instead?

Or visiting my in-laws and being pleasant when I don't really want to?

Or...or...or...?

I'm in. Starting now I am refusing sugar for 40 days to show appreciation for making it to the bonus round and not dying an alkie. Starting Friday I am meatless to honor the sentience of animals. I will fast from sun up to sun down to show appreciation for the abundance. Since I am an atheist my higher power will just have to be compassion for people who don't have the choices I do.

So sayeth me.

Sounds good to me!

Although if you're an atheist you obviously don't need to make it meaningful by having it start on Ash Wednesday. Pick a day that is meaningful for you.
