There are many virtues found in all spiritual traditions. The reasons or explanations for valuing virtues differ, but the living of them is more important for most of we humans.

Quote:
Whatever is right springs from one of four sources. It consists either in the perception and skilful treatment of the truth; or in maintaining good fellowship with men, giving to every one his due, and keeping faith in contracts and promises; or in the greatness and strength of a lofty and unconquered mind; or in the order and measure that constitute moderation and temperance.
Cicero

Quote:
1. Man must flee from this world here below for two reasons: because it is the nature of the soul to flee from evil, and because inevitable evil prevails and dominates this world here below. What is this flight and how can we accomplish it? Plato tells us it consists in "being assimilated to divinity." This then can be accomplished by judiciously conforming to justice, and holiness; in short, by virtue.
Plotinus, Enneads 1:2

To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness, and kindness.

Cicero
I like this quote. Thanks.

ETA--The quote itself didn't copy.

ETA#2--I like all of them!

I hate to be Mr Boody Awkward but the quotes that occure to me is Shakespeare "Because thou art virtuous, shall there be no more cakes and ale?' (Falstaffian -but sir Toby Belch, if I recall aright).

Also Ben Franklin "Beer is proof hat God loves us and wants us to be happy".

Just What is virtue? What is virtuous behaviour? Turning our back on the lotterry -win of the one life we have - well, who is it hurting if you do - but what a bloody shame. I say, grab it with both hands and fill your boots up. You may not get another chance. In fact, I'd wager on it.

Sought after virtue is not virtue. I don't know who to attribute that to but it's my favorite.

To wake the soul by tender strokes of art,
To raise the genius, and to mend the heart;
To make mankind, in conscious virtue bold.

I doubt Cicero would use bad grammar...a bad translation.

Quote:
We shall never be able to tell of virtue's brightness, unless by looking inward we perceive the fair countenance of justice and temperance, and are convinced that neither the evening nor morning-star, are half so beautiful and bright. But it is requisite to perceive objects of this kind with that eye by which the soul beholds such real beauties.
Plotinus, Ennead I, VI, 4
