All Nations, known in History or in Travels have hoped, believed and expected a future and better State. The Maker of the Universe, the Cause of all Things, whether We call it, Fate or Chance or god has inspired this Hope. If it is a Fraud, we shall never know it. We shall never resent the Imposition, be grateful for the Illusion, nor grieve for the disappointment.
Higher thoughts emanate from a distant realm; they are presented to us in an inchoate state, without defined form, with no conceptual structure. Our inner longing is directed only towards them. It is by a link with their riches that a blessing is bestowed on the structured thoughts, through which wisdom and knowledge go out into the world in all the expanding flow of their currents.
And when a person experiences a lack of understanding, and a decline in spiritual creativity, let him at once run to the hidden spring. Let him take shelter in the shadow of the Almighty, let him satisfy his thirst from the deep wells of the great masters who are wise of heart; let him study even if he does not fully comprehend what they say. Refreshed by the higher waters he will blossom and his spiritual vitality will be restored.
Let him reflect on his experience after returning from his intellectual adventure in the distant realm to the home ground of structured ideas, to the sphere of customary mental activity. He will then see, and behold, that the Lord's blessing has returned to him, and he has become like a spring that flows with increasing strength and a river that does not cease. For the source of blessing is in the place of mystery, in the hidden place where the highest secrets abide. The source of blessing is in a realm that is closed to the eye, as it is written: "The Lord will ordain blessing for you in your hidden places." (Deut. 2 8:18) 3
We can be thankful to a friend for a little money; and yet for the freedom and command of the whole earth, and for the great benefits of our being, our life, health, and reason, we look upon ourselves as under no obligation.
Nothing whatsoever is gained with the help of God or guru or wealth or other means, but only by self-effort aimed at complete mastery of the mind. Know that whatever gain anyone makes at anytime is
only due to his own efforts and not by any other means whatever. Only by relying upon your personal
powers can you surmount the insuperable barriers of your sensual desires.
Every virtue despises everything of a mortal form or nature, but chiefly honours the immortal. But this is especially the serious purpose of temperance, holding in contempt the pleasures which nail the soul to the body, and firmly established on holy pedestals, as Plato says. [Plato, Phaedrus, 254b.]
For how does temperance not make us perfect, banishing wholly from us the imperfect and passionate? In brief, the excessive domination of the passions does not permit men to be men, but draws them down to the irrational nature, and the brutal and the lawless.
