Back in 1958, I briefly attended an elementary school in Okmulgee named Wilson Elementary. It was north of downtown, a few blocks east of Oklahoma St.

I remember it as a wonderful, brick building with a slightly sunken gym floor right in the middle of the school. There were tables which could be pulled out of the walls for lunch, then stored back inside again. Several of the classrooms had outside doors which led outside to the playground.

Anyhow, I recently drove by there and the building is gone, with no trace that it ever existed. Does anyone know what happened to it and when?

My brother may recall this as we were there during his elementary years...will have to ask him and get back to you. He no longer lives there, but has traveled back not too long ago.

My name is Richard Dunham. I went to the school between 1954 to 1960. They tore it down in the mid sixties. Leon Davis was the principal. I keep in touch with his son. I am looking for a photo of the old school. I am doing a book of Old vintage photos of Okmulgee. The book has turned out to be 350 pages so far and growing. You can contact me at dunhamrd@gmail.com Take care, Richard Dunham

Default wilson elementary school

To reply to what happen to the Wilson Elementary school in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The city ended up closing most of all the elementary schools and having one school for all kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders. Another school for just 3rd, 4th and 5th graders then a Jr high for 6th-8th and high school 9th-12th. But after Wilson was tore down the 2nd Baptist church bought the land and builder church offices and houses on it.
