It's a small city, maybe 15,000 folks; it's the capital of the Creek Nation. The big deal in town is OSUIT. Not a lot there, really, but it's pretty country.

Are there any regular apartments in or near Okmulgee? Rules say if he has a home more than 50 miles away, he has to live in the dorms for the first two semesters, and I think one of the reasons he has express a little reluctance is that he feels as an adult he should be able to make his own choices where that is concerned, so I was thinking about moving anyways, and if there is anything available there might give it a shot..although, to be honest, my most ideal area for me that I would want to move to if not out of state would be around Talihina/Wilburton area, if I can find anything, but it might be hard because I have to find a rental home, and I don't think either town has an apt complex of their own.

It is a low rent town. The cost of living is low here. There is a good amount of gang activity there and it's a small town so you have to be careful where you go. I was born and raised here until I was 15 and the town was great back then, my father was Baseball commissioner, President of the Kiwanis Club, member of the Elk's Club, and he worked for American Saint Gobain Glass Plant for 20 years that went out of Business, my mother worked for the Government, my grandmother was the Post Master at the college you speak of and my Grandfather was the town postmaster but in the economy took a nose dive in 1975 and never really recovered. When you go places like Walmart in this town, you tend to see low income people , you don't really see many people that look like they could be middle, upper middle or upper class individuals. The taxes are high in this town and you would think that a lower income community would have affordability for it's citizens but that's not the case. I don't know what else to say. Except that some of the kids here get into trouble with the law, kids that come from the high school that is...I know this sounds pretty bad. But it's the truth. I'm sorry. I wouldn't send my child down here to live in the dorms to go to school, so if you live in a neighboring city I would keep her living there with you. The college is a good school so she should have a decent education and it's cheaper than going straight to OSU. Good Luck.

City-data say 12,321 as of 2010. It's unfortunate how folks keep bringing up towns that have been going downhill.
