A thread on good things about Cortland and nobody has mentioned Cortland Apples? I lived in New Jersey 30 years ago, and remember buying Cortland apples at the grocery store in the fall. Pretty tasty apples. Are they still available this time of year in stores around the northeastern US?

Yes they are still available. But stores tend to push the top 10 or so varieties that sell best. Many upstate NY apple orchards still have stands of Cortland apples..and are available direct from the orchard. There was a short article about a month ago discussing a guy who pursues apple varieties from long forgotten orchards across the eastern U.S. It's incredible how many varieties were once grown. One reason given was the dependence on apples for food/drink prior to 1900. The many varieties gave these foods/drinks different tastes to offset the heavy use of apples in people's diet.
Cortland should bill itself as "The Normal side of the Owasco valley". Ithaca just weirds me out. Seems like such a leftist paradise. Whenever I am there, I can't wait to leave. I feel like if I order something from a fast food restaurant and get the pronouns wrong, a mob of blue haired feminists will scream and throw rocks at me.
Never happened, but it feels on the verge of that type of atmosphere. I like that Cortland is mostly normal, even with a college presence.
