I just reviewed the stats and not sure why anyone would be alarmed..at all. Thus far it is basically mirroring last year, which is a GREAT THING. Yes rapes are up substantially, but that particular stat is based more on women reporting the rapes, and not necessarily rapes occuring...it is always notoriously undercounted because many women don't come forward. Maybe rapes have actually declined but more women are choosing to come forward, making it seem like there are more rapes. Who knows.

However, according to the stats, we are basically at the same record low crime level as this time last year. There have been no huge spikes, no crime sprees, none of the doomsday scenarios people relentlessly predict. It has only been a month, and in my opinion, a trend cannot be identified until the end of the 1st quarter. Nonetheless, anyone who is "alarmed", "concerned" or "worried" really has no reason to be as the crime rate is yet again at a record low, and in fact slightly lower than this time last year. The downward trend in crime continues...BE HAPPY.

The reason I say a bit alarmed is because with the two specific precincts I mentioned, rapes are at a count in one month not seen since the early 90s. In detail the 73rd precinct rape count is 20% higher than it was in 1993 and 50% higher than it was for 2001 in January alone. For Midtown North, it's 16.7% lower than it was in 1993 so while it's not higher, it's not far behind. Maybe the rate of rapes happening will calm down, but as of now it's something to keep an eye on IMO.

the 81st is pretty rough.....brevoort and RV are in the 81st....and especially the northwest and southeast section of the precinct rank among the most dangerous blocks in brooklyn.

The 113th precinct in South Jamaica has had an increase in every category except assaults, very interesting, I hope this trend doesn't accelerate as it gets warmer but it probably will.
