Anyone recommend a good area to live in Brooklyn with family? I recently moved to Long Island but the commute is becoming too much. Of course there are pros and cons to every place but I would prefer to stay in NYC and budget would be homes no more than 800k. I know that narrows down my options alot. But if anyone has any options for me please list!

Well that depends on where you are commuting to... I live in Queens, which may be another option for you, but I'll wait first to hear about your commute.

How far out are you now? Are you willing to give up Long Island schools for subpar NYC schools?

Houses for $800K in good Brooklyn neighborhoods? Not many choices out there and what you'll get is 1,500 sq ft and below and in need of renovations. Your only option would be South Brooklyn.

Unless your commute is over 2 hours each way, you're going to take a huge QOL hit to save an 2 hours a day.

I live and work in Brooklyn and my 6 mile commute takes me 40 - 45 minutes each way.

You are not going to find a property in decent area with good schools and other things for your kids in Brooklyn for that kind of money. You *might* find a decent condo or co-op, but private house? Nah, I don't think so.

Staten Island OTOH is more doable. But then your commute into Brooklyn may be better or worse than coming from LI.

Commute from SI into BK is atrocious as well. Not that much different than LI.

As myself and others have said; commute wise things are what they are. You like others in same situation past and present will have to decide on priorities.

There is no shortage of persons who commute from NJ, Westchester and LI to Brooklyn. You can throw PA and Conn into that mix as well. Sometimes you do what you have to do....

For a young single person moving house to Brooklyn or even parts of Manhattan or Queens from LI might make sense for a better commute. For a family man with wife and kids things are different, more so with latter.

You're looking at easily well north of one million to find a decent property in Brooklyn. That may or may not even get you a good school district. So you'll either have to put your kids in private (another expense) or finagle something.

Plenty of 800k and under single family homes in Marine Park, but the neighborhood has very limited public transportation options. No way to tell which neighborhood would work for you without knowing where you're commuting to tbh.

Family men from all around nyc commute for hour or two every day so their kids can live better lives and go to better schools.
That’s a fact.

There’s currently 5 on Zillow. Wouldn’t call that plenty.

For $800K not worth it IMO. Even in Marine Park.
