Anyone recommend a good area to live in Brooklyn with family? I recently moved to Long Island but the commute is becoming too much. Of course there are pros and cons to every place but I would prefer to stay in NYC and budget would be homes no more than 800k. I know that narrows down my options alot. But if anyone has any options for me please list!
Not even the ghetto hood will have homes for that cheap.
You might be better off renting for now. North East Queens area has the best school district in the city and lots of green spaces. It's also close to the LIRR and would get you to BK quicker vs. Long Island. Check out places like Whitestone, Bayside, Little Neck,Douglaston, Fresh Meadows, Auburndale, Oakland Gardens. Mostly white/asian residents.

The amount you're going to pay to save some time on the commute isn't going to be worth it once you figure all the things you're gonna end up trading off.
Constant smell of pot every place you go, having to dodge mopeds at every step you take, rats running around even in the middle of the day, people in need of social workers running around torturing people, cars speeding, doing donuts 1-2 o’clock in the morning, having to plan when to use your car in order to get a spot when you get back…..
Pretty sure in an earlier thread the OP said they were a mom with a few kids and someone for whom schools were a significant priority.
I think the simple reality here is that there is no perfect solution for every scenario in life. In fact, there rarely is. Sacrifices need to be made, priorities set.
In this instance I see three possibilities:
(1) Accept the long commute from Suffolk county to Brooklyn in order to allow the kids to grow up in a town on Long Island.
(2) Move to Brooklyn and get a much shorter commute but accept that you're going to live in a mixed bag neighborhood at best and your kids are going to grow up in an environment with a multitude of social issues being pretty prominent.
(3) Change jobs and accept a potentially worse employment situation to avoid having to make the above choice.
