top notch medical care , things to do, a public transportation system that can get you anywhere ,
typically higher paying jobs , winters that have endless things to do , etc are not just things for retirement.
they apply to anyone thinking of living here
It’s your believe that when comparing places with jobs comparable to NYC that its the only city that has these things? As someone who does have experience loving in other American metros, I assure you its not only not exclusive, but also lacking, especially now.
what we ran in to was here in nyc it’s just my wife and i . all the kids live local .
a two bedroom two bath apartment fits us perfectly.
in pa everyone stayed over so we needed an entire house with all all the costs of utilities and maintaining an entire house.
we saved nothing in housing costs and in fact cost us more .
we figured out we could make do with about a third less income .. when we looked in to working there and relocating before retiring, pay was half.
much better deal all around right here in bay terrace

BlanketyBlank family member is choosing between a job ( both similar pay )in NYC and another (currently very popular) state.
If he decides to take a N.Y.C. job he would also pay ridiculous money for rent in N.Y.C.
If he decides to take a N.Y.C. job and drive from another state address driving back and forth would take a physical toll.
Would not advise.
Since there is not much of a difference in pay from the state he is in and N.Y.C.
it only makes sense to stay where he is.
Now if BlankketyBlank mentioned if the family member was offered ( only an example ) 50G over his currrent pay
to accept a job in N.Y.C. then that might be worth consideration.
Stabilized, controlled, same same to people who never got that break.
but it isn’t the same .,.they are totally different rules and situations…both from an owner stand point and tenant standpoint . the fact one is ignorant of the difference and thinks they are the same doesn’t change the fact they aren’t
which is why rent controlled apartments are just about a thing of the past.
anyone who wants a stabilized apartment can have one ..more than half of all rentals are stabilized .that doesn’t mean below market rents though .
you can have an apartment in any of the stabilized buildings in our area but they are market rent.
but stabilization is another plus for nyc .. if op wants to rent just about any non luxury building will offer guaranteed renewals and not have you subject to the whims of a small time landlord wanna be

Top notch medical care. For anyone not in the final 2 years of their life (where 90% of medical expenses are spent) , I don’t think NYC has any tangibly better medical care than any other urban center in the US. In fact, outside of Manhattan, the city’s medical care caters to Medicaid recipients and is literally developing country level.
Public transport system. Unless one is literally poor and can’t afford car ownership even outside of NYC, I don’t see this as a major plus. Furthermore, are we still pretending that the MTA doesn’t suck the life out of and waste the time of its customers day in and day out?
Higher paying jobs? Maybe for certain sectors but my family member didn’t find that to be the case in his case. NYC offers weren’t significantly greater. They would basically cover the state/ city income tax.

Have you or have you not ever owned and used a car while living in NYC? If you have, your point about public transportation is wholly invalid.
Have you or have you not at least attempted to use medical care in another major metro area of the US? If you have not, your point about medical care is wholly invalid.
With regard to pay, you’re correct as your industry may be much better paying or only exists at a large enough scale in NYC.
