Has anyone here ever had small businesses charge you to use a credit card? I've had this done to me about four years ago, when I went to a restaurant and was charged two dollars so that I can use my credit card. I've never heard of such a thing and paid it to avoid any problems. I just promised myself that I'll never go to that establishment again. Recently, a friend of mine went to a beauty parlor and they charged her a whopping ten dollar fee so that she can use her credit card! Is this normal? Why do businesses do this? It sounds like fraud to me!
There's a diner somewhere in midtown that has the fee but they post it in the menu so it's not a surprise. My shoe cobbler also charges a fee but tells me beforehand in case I prefer to pay cash.

Why do they do it? You know how much credit cards charge in fees? Plus cash is untaxed very easily at these business’s. Employees I’m sure are paid in cash to save payroll taxes. Can’t do that if you don’t get cash income anymore.
Plus some business doesn’t want to wait for the transfers. Plus credit card charge backs from customers. Plus stolen credit cards being used is a risk.
Many many reasons.
There’s lots of rules plus credit card and debit card is different in the eyes of New York. But they don’t really care because they only mediate. I don’t think they fine. Especially smaller business.
Many places have been doing this recently. I use my credit card everywhere for airline points (best thing i ever did) but if it’s 3 percent cheaper to use Cash i use cash especially on bigger purchases.

These same cash only or cash preference businesses whined at the beginning of the lockdown. Why? Because they couldn't produce the tax records or sales receipts to show they qualified for the PPP loan money they requested.
Same for the employees who work in cash only businesses like barbers, waiters, bartenders, cooks, etc.
The Feds were forced to ease restrictions. And then we got all the fraud. Too bad these bad actors don't get punished for their actions. You shouldn't be able to have it both ways.
So many people pay zero attention to bills and laws in this state and it's quite shocking.
Cuomo passed a law YEARS ago allowing businesses to charge customers to use credit cards essentially passing credit card feeds on to consumers vs. the business paying in.

Nothing fraudulent about it. It's the same concept as congestion pricing.
You ask, Why do they do this? Charging you more for a credit card makes a lot of sense, because when you use a credit card, the business is stuck with a fee. I can't believe you didn't figure this out. But I believe that the rule is that rather than charge you, they're supposed to offer a discount for cash.
This is one reason I like to go to cash-only restaurants, where I know that every penny goes to the restaurant.

Jeez
Is there a cap on the fee? Otherwise places can theoretically charge unlimited fees on a nominal priced item or services.
Honestly, even though I’m against it - I can’t wait until we ALL go CBDC (digital currency) so that everyone can be just as effed as those of us who require bank accounts to get paid. Sorry, but there I said it. I literally don’t work with cash - why should those of us who get paid electronically be taxed and watched while the rest of the cash paid be set free from taxes, credit card payments and lord knows what else?
