From what I have read palm trees can withstand temps as low as 10 - 20 degrees. This, however, has been a very long cold spell

Tmozer if you are in zone 7, along the coast in NJ there may just be a few palms you could plant.

Palm Tree cold tolerance climate and environmental information, zones and maps to enable the best care and growth of your Palms.

I have been wondering what effect this extended cold winter blast is having on our local wildlife

Yes, I will be very sad if I don't see the gators along the causeway going to the beach parking area of Huntington Beach State Park when it gets warmer!

Why would they cancel the marathon?...
Brought to you by the same folks who decided to destroy rallies that brought over half million visitors to the Grand Strand every year. Logic, reason and intelligence are not job requirements for politicians. Wonder what the 6500+ runners had to say about this decision?

There are numerous varieties of palms. with some much more cold-tolerant than others. Our sago palms took a real beating during the severe cold spells. The taller pindo palms have never shown any damage until this year and are cause for real concern. Neighbor's mexican fan palm ends up having all its fronds cut off every year due to cold damage.

Managed to get in a visit to the river and to the beach before melting began. Huntington Beach St Park was beautiful but the beach was a disappointment. A 7am high tide had cleared most of the snow directly on the beach.

I'm embarrassed to tell you, but I'm shooting an old Fuji S5200, a fixed-lens digital that offers a little more creative control than most point-n-shoots but far below the SLR's. IMO, Fuji uses some of the best lens available in affordable cameras. This is my 4th Fuji and loved every one of 'em. Perhaps someday it will be replaced by a DSLR, but not in this economy. Thanks for your comment.

Even though I would be shamed to tell you how much money I have spent on my Nikon equipment, I would be lucky to capture images as nice as yours. It's not the equipment, it's the eye (and being in the right place with a camera. Any camera).

Well I can tell you the runners that checked in here were not happy (and that is putting it mildly). Most of what was said can not be repeated on here. If their position represents the others, next years marathon will be a lot smaller. It is a shame and completely unnecessary.

The snow was incredibly fun! It brought my older teens back to their childhood, which they thoroughly enjoyed. They were out making snow angels, throwing snowballs, and having a great time.

Yes, the run should have started at Noon.......the roads were all clear of melted snow by then. I don't blame the runners or vendors who waited and planned all year for this. I was stunned at the announcement. Even being a non resident of SC I knew it would melt in time. Who's ever calling the shots was off track.
